Essential Oils are Good for Teeth & Gums

Essential oils are all the hype right now and for good reason - They’ve been found to relieve stress, boost energy, have healing properties, enhance your immunity, and much more! And NOW, we’ve come to find different ways they can boost your oral health. We should mention that essential oils are not a replacement of your regular oral hygiene habits such as brushing, using mouthwash, and flossing daily. They should only be used as an added benefit to your oral health.

Fights Bad Breath Essential oils such as Peppermint, Tea Tree oil, Myrrh, and Eucalyptus can help fend off bacteria that causes bad breath. They have anti-viral, anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial properties that keep your breath smelling fresh all day!

Treats Gingivitis The antibacterial properties of clove and tea tree oil can treat gingivitis and other gum issues. Cinnamon is another essential oil that can be used to treat gingivitis because of its antimicrobial potency that fights against the bacteria responsible for gum disease and also stimulates blood circulation to the gums, in turn promoting healthy gums.

Relieves Toothache Clove essential oil has been used for hundreds of years to relieve tooth pain so it’s no surprise that it’s on this list. Since clove has pretty strong germicidal properties, dentists have actually used clove to disinfect root canals and relieve pain.

Fight Cavities Rosemary essential oil is a natural disinfectant that can help remove bad oral bacteria that causes cavities, bad breath, plaque buildup, and other minor dental issues. Clove and tea tree are other essential oils that benefit the prevention of tooth decay.

How to use essential oils in your oral health routine

If you’re into natural remedies, medicine, etc. Then you may have heard of oil pulling. It’s where you take liquid coconut oil and swish it in your mouth between 5 to 20 minutes, then spit it out. Now, before you say “NO WAY” it has been shown to kill bacteria in your mouth, help reduce bad breath, prevent cavities and fight gingivitis. To get the biggest benefits from oil pulling, you can add a couple of drops of essential oils to the coconut oil before swishing it in your mouth. You can also add a couple of drops to water and make your own mouth rinse or simply add a drop to your toothpaste before you brush. If you want to apply the essential oil on an effected area, be sure to dilute it with a carrier oil like coconut oil.

Along with these natural remedies to boost your oral health, we recommend eating a nutrient-packed diet to strengthen your teeth from the inside out and continuing your regular oral hygiene routine.
