Gum and Heart Disease -- Is there a connection?

Holly Klock - Tuesday, February 13, 2018 -

What is the connection between periodontitis and heart disease?  One of the main symptoms of gum disease is swelling. The infection can develop below the gum line and that is when the issues comes in. This is because the bacteria from the lower gum infection can then travel through the body through pathways in the mouth including the ones that lead to the heart. The more bacteria that is building up in your mouth, the more you could actually have in your heart. So how can you prevent the spread of infection to your heart? Follow the steps below to help:

  1. Address your oral health with a professional. Make sure you talk to your dentist if something feels off. Most of the time, if you stay up to date with your check-ups, health issues can be caught sooner than later.
  2. Brush your teeth. Making sure that you brush your teeth thoroughly can help decrease the amount of bacteria in your mouth, thus, preventing the spread of any bacteria to your heart!
  3. Floss regularly. Sometimes brushing your teeth isn’t enough. Flossing can get to the hard to reach bacteria in your mouth that hides between your teeth. Don’t forget to floss those pearly whites to complete your teeth cleaning regimen!
  4. Mouthwash. To complete this triple threat, swishing some mouthwash around your mouth can really seal the “healthy teeth” deal.
  5. Avoid. There are certain habits that can increase your risk of gum disease such as smoking or a bad diet.

Overall, living a healthy lifestyle includes your dental upkeep. Avoiding unhealthy habits and adopting new, healthy ones are important to preventing all types of systemic diseases. Make a checklist of things to do every day: brush, floss, wash. Then, remember to call Maestri Family Dentistry to schedule your check ups and address any concerns you have!
